Used predominately for knitting and braiding, madake forms the heart of Beppu bamboo ware, a governmentally designated traditional craft of Oita Prefecture. High-quality madake is commonly used for a variety of baskets, made through a complex four-step process, seasoning the bamboo, processing, knitting and braiding, and finally finishing. The complex techniques employed in the process play a critical role in the final design of each product.
Beppu Bamboo Japan is a project that incorporates traditional techniques of Beppu bamboo work and modern sensibility. This results in an object with endless possibilities created by rethinking a traditional shape of a basket and collaborating with different materials.
